Gates tells CNN this wave is not another gadget cycle. If the technology is different, the rules have to be different too.
Bill Gates staking his reputation that AI is not like past technology is a warning about scale. Electricity and the internet did not write their own code. Systems this capable can act faster than a legislature, a regulator, or a board.
That is not a reason to freeze American research. It is a reason to keep humans accountable as the systems get more capable—and not pretend this is just another app store.
American AI Safeguards will apply that difference in public, to the legislation that actually moves.
