Bill Gates warns AI will be designed ‘by and for the richest’ without regulation
Gates says the market will aim AI at whoever can pay. Who the systems serve is a policy issue—not a reason to surrender the frontier.
If AI is left only to the market, it will be designed by and for the people who already have the most. That is not a reason to freeze American research. It is a reason to write public policy that keeps the technology public-minded without handing the lead to every rival that will not pause.
Opportunity is one of the tests we apply. So is meaningful human accountability. Policymakers who talk only about labs, or only about jobs, will fail the record we publish.
American AI Safeguards will apply that standard in public: protect Americans, preserve innovation, and keep humans in control as the systems get more capable.
