‘They are in PANIC mode’: Why AI CEOs are agreeing to a slowdown

CEOs calling for a slowdown is not a governing plan. America still has to lead—and keep humans in control.

When frontier CEOs agree, on television, that the industry should slow down, that is news. It is not a substitute for policy. A pause that only America honors is a gift to every rival that will not pause. Blind acceleration is not leadership either.

Some of the panic is about real capability. Some of it is about open-source competition, data centers, and the next incident. Policymakers who cannot tell the difference will fail our five-question test.

American AI Safeguards will keep the debate on evaluation, biosecurity, cybersecurity, and meaningful human accountability—so a television slowdown does not become the whole argument.
